SippnSunshine Style - Summer Staples with Versatility

I’ve heard that on average, we only wear about 20 percent of the clothes in our closet. I don’t know about you, but that holds true for me. It’s just natural to reach for the items that are comfortable, fit just right and make you feel good. It’s a bonus when those favorite pieces are wardrobe staples that can be styled multiple ways.

SippnSunshine Style - Summer Wardrobe Staple, the T-shirt dress.

A staple in my closet is this black t-shirt dress. One of my favorites is from Old Navy, it has a high neckline for work, but a fun, more relaxed fit for comfort. You can style it many different ways for travel, date night, or a more casual look.

Honestly, I wear mine all year long; through spring, with a jacket or sweater, in the summer with a baseball hat, Converse sneakers or statement sandals, and in the fall with a patterned legging and boots or a sweater and flats.

SippnSunshine Style - The Jean Jacket, a wardrobe staple.

My mom and I both found that when we are looking for multiple looks from a staple piece in our closets, adding a jean jacket is always a must! A jean jacket allows you to easily transition into evening hours and it’s perfect to wear at shaded wineries. You can always tie the jacket around your waist if you get too warm.

My jacket above is from American Eagle, a million years ago, but they have similar styled ones available now!

Here’s mom wearing her favorite jean jacket and two of her favorite staple pieces in her closet, a gray skirt and white t-shirt.

When shopping for staples, look for pieces that will add versatility to your wardrobe.

Ask yourself how you would wear it in various situations:

  • At work - Does this meet with my company dress code? Would I feel confident in this if I had a meeting with the boss?

  • Out for cocktails or on date night - Can I dress this up with nice shoes, pretty jewelry and a cute handbag?

  • To lunch with friends - Is this my personal style?

  • For travel - Is this comfortable?

  • On the weekend - Can I wear this with flats, tennis shoes or sandals?

You get the idea. If you can visualize how you would wear the item on multiple occasions then it might be worth buying. The most important thing, is to purchase items that you know will work with at least two or three other articles of clothing in your closet.

This is the same white t-shirt and gray skirt, she just swapped out the jean jacket for a blazer and the tennis shoes for a dressy sandal.

With a few staple pieces you can create multiple looks. Here is a list of some of our favorite must haves to make dressing this summer a breeze:

Summer Staples:

  2. T-shirt dress, this one is similar.

  3. White t-shirt

  4. Sandals, these red ones are similar.

  5. White tennis shoes, these are mom’s current favorite.

  6. A hat, we love this Panama hat.
